How to Store Sweaters Properly

Spring time calls for storing some of your wardrobe you won’t be wearing until Fall/Winter. Call me crazy but I like to rewear my clothing. This means keeping them in good, wearable condition.

I know some ladies like to get new pieces all the time, and that’s fine too. BUT for those who want to keep and rewear their garments season-after-season, we need to be savvy about storing pieces properly.

Most sweaters can be delicate depending on the knitting and material. Most are woven in either cashmere, merino wool, cotton or a few blends mixed together. Whatever the knit, I find these storing tips the best for all sweaters.

STEP 1

Make sure to have a few essentials on-hand before you start storing your sweaters.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • lavender or cedar sachets
  • sweater stone
  • fabric storage bins with or without lids -or-
  • clothing drawer dividers

STEP 2

  • Pull out all your sweaters you want to store.
  • One at a time, lay flat and use your Sweater Stone to remove any pilling on each sweater.
  • Sweater Stones can be messy so be sure to do this process in a place you can easily clean. Avoid doing this on your bed or sofa.

STEP 3

  • Place your lavender or cedar sachets in each fabric bin.
  • Make sure to place one sachet at the bottom per storage bin/box.
  • Why fabric over plastic bins? You want your sweaters to breathe or else they can get musty and grow mildew.
  • If you reserved a drawer in your dresser to store sweaters, use dividers and also place one sachet in the back corner of drawer.

STEP 4

  • Time to fold/roll your sweaters to store in your fabric bins or dresser drawer.
  • I prefer to use the KonMari Method, see below for reference.

STEP 5

  • Place rolled sweaters in fabric bin from heavier/bulky on the bottom and lightweight sweaters on top if you have a deep storage bin.
  • If you have shallow storage bins, place alike sweaters for each bin.
  • Categorize by lightweight, medium, heavy sweaters.
