When it comes to doing hair, it definitely pays to be well versed in all textures. For the ladies with curly hair, we spoke with Field leader and Educator Starr Mason to learn more about type 4 hair.
Starr is based out of the DMV area with over 30 years of experience and is a curly girl with type 4 hair. She’s well versed in one of the most misunderstood yet beautiful hair types.
What are the best moisturizers used to manage and tame the hair, especially different textures of hair?
I love the Cibu CBD line. It has a moisturizing CBD Shampoo and Conditioner which is sulfate, vegan and color safe. It also has pure CBD which promotes healthy scalp and argan oil which eliminates frizz and shine. The CBD Moisture Leave-in is a great light weight conditioning spray that adds moisture and shine for all hair textures.
How long does it take to style and keep your curls from looking frizzy and staying shiny? and healthy?Â
It all starts with moisture. A bi-weekly moisturizing routine is a great start. Styling can be easy depending on the style. After shampooing and conditioning, I like to apply my styling products in small sections. At times I may need to layer different styling products to create my finish look.
If you’re wearing your hair in its curly state, this can take 15-30 minutes depending on your density and length. I find that keeping my hair tamed at night with a silk bonnet allows me to have an easy morning routine. It also helps your curls stay fresh with a little refresh from our CBD Moisture leave-in spray.
What is 4C hair exactly?Â
4C hair is Coiled curl with a fine texture; in the shape of a zigzag formation which appears to be very tight and leaves close to the scalp. 4C hair is the most fragile of all the textures. It gives the look of being very strong but it can be easily damaged by heat, pulling and too much tension.
Why does 4C hair need protein and moisturizers?Â
Additional moisture is needed because the natural scalp moisture doesn’t travel all the way down the zigzag. It’s really important to choose the right moisturizer. You don’t want the wrong product to weight the hair down and make it look dull. Protein gives the 4C hair strength. You always want to have a good balance of moisture and protein. Too much protein can cause the hair to break.
What are some moisturizers and proteins used for 4C hair?Â
I would recommend consulting a salon professional for a full consultation. Every 4C curl is different. Getting a consultation with a hair analysis helps you understand your curl and what the curls may need in that moment. I would recommend the Cibu Repair and Protect Shampoo and a conditioner with Biotin and Silk Protein for damaged hair. CIBU Spring Roll defines 4C hair with moisture from Kukui Nut, Aloe and Shea Butter.
Any last thoughts you would like to add?Â
Finding a salon professional is the key. They will get to know your curls and understand how much moisture/protein you need. They also make recommendations to when you need a treatment or trim.
