It wasn’t until a couple years ago that I learned what onigiri was. I am a sushi lover and the fact that I recently had onigiri was mind-blowing. Something sushi-like that I can eat on-the-go? Yes, please.
Onigiri is best described as a rice ball formed into a triangular shape wrapped in nori (seaweed). It can be filled with anything! According to Wikipedia, the rice of onigiri is plain rice while sushi rice is made with rice + vinegar + sugar and salt. Onigiri is portable and that’s what I love about it – great for picnics, on-the-go, snacks (since it’s portion controlled),

Asahi Imports
đź“Ť6105 Burnet Rd. 78757
đź“Ť3005 S. Lamar Blvd. 78704
Asahi Imports is a Japanese grocery store where you can load up on drinks, snacks, ramen, gits, specialty ingredients, sake and Japanese beers, but they also have an Onigiri Corner! This Onigiri Corner is equivalent to what you would see in convenience stores all over Japan – onigiri wrapped and ready as a grab-and-go. There are so many flavors to choose from – names I haven’t even heard of, so you know it’s legit. If you’re feeling super hungry, pick up a bento box while you’re at it! PSA: on the weekends, they have soft serve (matcha, sesame, or swirl!).
Snow Ball Rice Ball
đź“Ť6929 Airport Blvd. 78752
This place is tucked away in Snowy Village. But it’s a great two-in-one. You can order a couple onigiris and finish your meal with shaved ice! Can’t beat that. My favorite onigiri is the grilled salmon (simple) and the shitake mushroom egg. The menu is easy to read and uses simple ingredients so it’s a good place to try onigiri if it’s your first time!
Sugar Pine
đź“Ť8578 Research Blvd. 78758
Sugar Pine is one of those places that has a little bit of everything – even a cute dog-friendly patio. On top of onigiri, they offer oodles of noodles such as: soba noodles, yaki-soba, yaki-udon. They are also known for their homemade exotic ice cream and sorbet flavors that you can’t find at other places such as: taro, coconut, watermelon thai basil. The flavors change based on the season so it’s good to check their socials or give them a call! Sugar Pine is a great option for a place when you want to sit and enjoy your onigiri in a nice cafe-like setting.
