Donut Vibe Guide to Austin

During a recent dinner conversation our Editor of The Savvy Life informed me that her favorite donut was from Krispy Kreme. My jaw dropped!! “No way…. But why…” were my exact thoughts. Which caused me to write this post. Because girlfriend, I beg to differ!

Secretly, our goal is to get our Editor to try EM ALL. So we can casually re-visit this conversation.

One of my favorite childhood treats were donuts. There’s something so comforting about a warm glazed donut followed by a glass of milk, cup of coffee or tea. That’s why, before you know it, you’ve eaten six or twelve all by yourself.

Do-nut even get me started on the donut holes. There had to be at least one donut pun in here, LOL.

Over the years I’ve noticed donuts got fancy. You’re probably thinking, “how can a donut get fancy?” It can.

Toppings can go from regular to gourmet. Batter can go from regular to brioche. Just saying brioche makes you feel Parisian-type-of-fancy, doesn’t it?! And you’re not an adult if you haven’t paid for an $8 donut, right? It’s on the adulting checklist somewhere I know it!

Call me old-fashioned but my go-to donut is the original glazed. At times this can change. Let’s say it’s the third Wednesday of the month and it’s a new moon, I might be in the mood for a different type of donut.

Therefore, I feel it’s important to group donuts into levels based on your current donut-vibe. Genius, I know. Below I’ve rounded up a couple of Austin donut shops into three categories so you know exactly what you’re walking into.

Regular Good Old-Fashioned Donuts for the kids or the kid in you (there’s no judging)

Round Rock Donuts – hands down the best glazed donuts in town! You can even get a Texas Sized Donut (but of course)!!  PSA: there is always a line at the drive thru, so go early or park and order at the window!

Donut Crown

Grand Donuts

HEB – they have a glazed croissant which is all sorts of amazing!!

Howdy Donuts

KC Donuts

Ken’s Donuts

Krispy Kreme

S-H Donuts

Shipley’s Do-Nuts – always a solid choice

Middle Ground Donuts for when you’re feeling not too fancy but not too basic

Angel Donuts – apparently you can also get bubble tea here too!! Knock out two birds with one stone!

Donut Hub – where you can get CUSTOM donuts for yourself a friend

Little Lucy’s – because there is nothing better than MINI donuts! They make them hot and fresh, and you can pick your donut toppings/sugar flavor and/or dips!

Voodoo Doughnut – when you’re looking for some crazy combos or decorations

Bougie Donuts for when you’re feeling fancy and for the adults who appreciate the finer things in life (yes, a donut counts)

Andy K’s Donuts – available at a couple locations around Austin.

Bougie’s Donuts and Coffee – they don’t call themselves bougie for nothing.

Bom Bakeshop – mochi donuts. A donut with an airy but chewy mochi twist.

Gourdough’s – ever paid more than $5 for a single donut? There are some decant topping choices here!

Lola’s Donuts

OMG Squee – cute donuts (and place) but these are a denser type of mochi donut. PSA: the taiyaki and the Japanese cheesecake are a must here.

Salty Donut – they are known for their artisanal brioche-based donuts! The best thing is that you can pre-order and they have seasonal offerings too!
