As much as I love coffee, sometimes I’m feeling something a little different in the morning. Enter the matcha latte. Matcha lattes have even become a trend in the last couple of years (or maybe it’s my instagram feed). Despite being a “trend”, it tastes amazing! I’ve read that coffee and matcha are similar, but coffee gives you an instant caffeine kick which can sometimes lead to crashing. On the other hand, matcha gives you the same energy boost but at a slower pace that supposedly prevents crashing.
In some cultures, preparing matcha is considered a ritual as it is calming to make. More on that here. Sometimes I get crafty and make my own matcha lattes at home to save a few dollars #frugal. And it’s super easy! Here’s a quick recipe…
Homemade Matcha Latte Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp. Matcha powder (#protip: you can buy a huge bag at Costco for less than $20)
- Sugar or any sweetener to your liking
Instructions:
- Combine first two ingredients in a small bowl
- Add about 2 tsp of boiled water to the bowl. If you want to be really precise, use water between 158°F (70°C) – 176°F (80°C)
- Whisk the ingredients and hot water together with a chasen (whisk) (#protip: this is a must-have tool to get a clump-free drink)
- Pour whisked/clump-free mixture into a cup
- For a hot matcha latte: Add steamed milk of choice. For a cold matcha latte: Add cold milk of choice + ice cubes (#protip: sometimes I like to combine milk and soy or milk and almond milk).
- Kick back and enjoy!
