As we slowly start to enter the summer months where the sun is out the longest, sun protection is a MUST DO. We should be wearing sunscreen year-round, especially now that we have our faces in our screens daily. YES, screens! Did you know that the light emitting from your computers and phones is bad for your skin (and eyes too).
We’re not saying you have to live in a protective shield or bubble, but you should definitely consider making sunblock a daily habit.
Luckily we asked a few of our favorite skincare and beauty experts to chime in on what products they recommend for sun protection. Our editor also weighs in on her fave drugstore brands.
SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR FACE
Licensed Esthetician Kelly Horton-Beeman of Faces SkinGym says, “Sunbetter® Tone Smart Sunscreen is hands down the best!”
“It acts as a primer with physical blocks and high SPF factors. It’s great for reapplication throughout the day and uses a tone smart technology to adjust to your skin tone. It also comes in both tinted and non-tinted formulas and are water resistant, 100% mineral and oil free.”
Kelly also suggests for acne prone skin to try AlumierMD Clear shield broad spectrum spf 42. It contains ingredients like Niacinimide and sodium hyaluronate for those with oily skin.
Eric our fave IG Skincare Reviewer aka @MoisturizedEric swears by his faves, “I love to use Supergoop Unseen sunscreen. The velvet texture has always been a favorite without leaving it greasy looking. I put it on at least 30 minutes before going into the sun. I also love the glow stick for reapplication which gives me that extra bit of glow. The Amazonian oils in it have me hella dewy and delicious looking.”
TSL’s editor, Maria Von Losch switches up her skincare products every few months for testing and reviewing. She put some drugstore brands to the test and loves Aveeno Positively Radiant sheer moisturizer broad spectrum spf 30. “It’s something I don’t have to think about applying after I wash my face in the morning. It’s a moisturizer plus sunscreen and doesn’t cause any irritations for my sensitive skin.”
SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR BODY
“For the body, I love using Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Sol Oil because of its gorgeous shimmer and broad spectrum protection,” said @MoisturizedEric while enjoying the beach in Los Cabos Mexico. “My friends tried it as well and loved it too. We all were smelling like toasted coconuts and glowing while staying protected.”
On rotation in Maria’s beauty cabinet (and her hubby’s too) is Sun Bum broad spectrum spf 30. “The smell is what got me. I feel like I’m vacationing on a tropical island while staying protected from the harmful UV rays. It goes on sheer and is water resistant for up to 80 minutes.”
SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR HAIR
Scalp and Hair Specialist, Julia Peterson @JuliaPetersonHair says, “I use and suggest to clients Moroccanoil Protect and Prevent spray, it helps keep your color from oxidizing while protecting your hair from the sun. It’s also great for detangling your hair.”
“For hair protection, I definitely use Sun Bum scalp and hair mist,” comments Eric @MoisturizedEric. “It’s lightweight so your hair doesn’t weigh down.”
“This may be a stretch for drugstore, but I love Coola’s Scalp and Hair Mist Organic sunscreen. I love that it’s plant based, lightweight and good on color treated hair. It’s also water resistant for up to 80 minutes,” adds Maria, TSL editor-in-chief.
