5 Ways 5 Days of Styling Not-so-Basic Black

Location: Carlsbad Village, CA

I know what you’re probably thinking? Black? Really? Well, it’s come to my attention that you ladies requested new and interesting ways to style black pieces. Especially for all you who can’t break away from their black clothing. I’ve gotcha covered with shopping tips and outfit ideas below.

Personally, I’ve been all about color, neutrals and prints for years. It might appear that I’ve ditched my trusty ‘ol black pieces. Well, I haven’t. I actually found new black options that have an interesting cut, shape, trim or design.

If you’re bored of your basic black staples and want to update them here’s some savvy shopping tips:

  1. Look for tops with interesting details to the neckline and bottom of sleeves, like ruffles or pleats.
  2. Speaking of sleeves, find a different sleeve shape and length that you wouldn’t normally wear. Like an exaggerated puff sleeve long or capped or a ruched sleeve long or 3/4 length.
  3. Asymmetrical necklines and hemlines to tops, skirts and dresses are also creative ways to wear black.
  4. Find pieces with interesting details to buttons, zippers and stitching in black.
  5. Lastly, try things on! Don’t pull something off the rack and say, “Oh I don’t like this or this won’t look good on me.” Many things don’t have hanger appeal, so try it on. And bring a couple of sizes of the same piece to compare fit.

BTW, are you getting my emails? If not sign up in the pop-up box or at the bottom of this page. I’d love to send you some goodies! xx, Maria

how to style black tops

Find a top with an interesting hemline at the bottom like this top by Tibi [shop HERE]. This is an exaggerated asymmetric hemline but it’s chic enough to wear to the office.

You can also style this asymmetrical top for a weekend getaway look by pairing it with stylish accessories and a printed cropped trouser. Pants, bag and shoes all from Zara.

Find a dress that has a little color pop to a mostly all black palette. This dress by The Kooples [shop HERE] has a tiered ruffled bottom half, giving this piece more flair.
